The House

An old family compound, opened to guests in 2009.

Frangipani Rooms sits on a lane off Jalan Danau Poso, in the eastern part of Denpasar where the city thins out toward Sanur and the mornings still smell of frangipani and salt. The compound has been in the Wijaya family for three generations. When the children moved away, Ketut and Made Wijaya opened the back rooms to travellers rather than let the courtyard go quiet, and they have kept it that way ever since.

Nothing here is grand. The buildings are low, whitewashed, and roofed in old terracotta tiles that keep the rooms cool through the middle of the day. A frangipani tree older than any of us shades the courtyard where breakfast is served each morning. There is no lobby, no lift, no piped music: you check in at the family table, you are handed a heavy brass key, and you are shown to your room past the shrine and the potted orchids.

Most of our guests come to us for the same reasons. We are ten minutes on a bicycle from Sanur beach, a short ride from the Bali Museum and the Badung morning market, and far enough from the main road that you hear roosters before you hear traffic. People come for a few quiet nights and often stay longer than they planned.

We are small on purpose. With only nine rooms, Made knows every guest by name before breakfast is over, and there is always someone at the desk who can point you toward a good warung, arrange an airport pickup, or lend you an umbrella when the afternoon rain comes in.

What Guests Say

A few words from recent stays.

We booked two nights and stayed six. The courtyard is the calmest corner of Denpasar and Nyoman’s breakfast ruined us for hotels forever.

Simple, spotless and genuinely warm. Ketut fixed my bicycle without being asked and Gede talked me out of the tourist traps. A proper guesthouse.

Daniel K. · Singapore · 1 month ago

Lovely spot and very quiet at night. Rooms are basic in the best way. Only wish the wifi reached the far verandah, but we were happier without it.
